The origin of Vung Tau’s place-name

Vung Tau is not only famous place in Vietnam but also in many countries worldwide. The city located in the provincal south, far 120km from Ho Chi Minh City, three side border on sea with peninsula length 20km, the north border on Ba Ria town.

• Climate: tropical monsoon
• Average temperature: 26 oC-28 oC
• There are 2 seasons:
  + Rainy season from May to October
  + Dry season from November to April
• Sea water: average temperature from 25-29 oC; Salinity is regularly 32-35%.

Vung Tau is famous because of provincal big tourist center.

Vung Tau city has 2 main mountains: Tuong Ky mountain (Big mountain) with height 249m, Tao Phung mountain (Small mountain) with height 170m made by 521 stone pieces, remain area is deep sand gradation.

Vung Tau city has sand-hill line locating parallel with beach in southeast (Thuy Van Beach) from Tao Phung mountain’s foot to Lap door with length about 10km. The highest Doi Cat is 32m in Thang Nhat ward, the lowest one is 4m in Thang Tam ward. Rows of willows are planted along sand-hills by beach increasing natural beauty while stopping the sea wind from Southeast direct to delta aiming to reduce losses of crop. In addition, there are still some sand-hills between Thang Nhat ward and Phuoc Thang ward.

There are the biggest Dinh river of city located in northwest with length of 11km, Cay Khe canal in northeast with length of 6km, Ba canal in the center of city between Thang Nhut ward and Phuoc Thang ward with length of 8km, Ben Dinh canal in the south of Ben Dinh island in Thang Nhi ward; Suoi Nuoc canal, Song Cai canal and Ong Nam canal in Lap door where take water into the city in the east of Phuoc Thang ward.

The city has many lotus swamps very big with width of 406 hectares from Tao Phung mountain’s food in Thang Tam ward to the center of Thang Nhut ward where lotus swamps are connected from Ban forest to Cay Khe canal.

Vung Tau has many beautiful beaches such as Hind Beach (Thuy Van), Front Beach (Tam Duong), Dau Beach (Phuong Thao), Dua Beach (Huong Phong), Vong Nguyet Beach (O Quan Beach in Nghinh Phong cape) and Lang Du Beach. From Vong Nguyet Beach direct to seaside there are Bong Dao island (Ba island). Vung Tau is gateway for coming Ganh Rai pool…and other monuments, famous landscapes such as Hai Dang on Small Mountain, Big Mountain, White palace, Niet Ban Tinh Xa, Thich Ca Phat Dai, Long Son Big House… where are attractive for tourists.

Vung Tau is the large tourist center in Vietnam . It is beautiful and attractive sea city by hamonious combination between sea, mountain with urban architects and cultural buildings such as status, pagodas, churches… Vung Tau has not winter therefore tourist parks can in activities throughout the year.

Vung Tau is not only the tourist center but also the biggest oil industrial center of Vietnam . There are service ports, storages, offices, works for serving oil exploration here. The yield of oil exploitation is about 16 million tons and 1.5 billion m 3 of gas in 2000.

In addition, Vung Tau has the Dong Xuyen concentrated industrial park with width of 160ha. Industrial types investing in this industrial park include: oil services, maritime services, ship repair.

Seafood processing is also a strong point with yield of catch by 42,000 – 45,000tons/year. The most yield of seafood processing is frozen seafood for serving export and domestic consumers.

The city is currently investing and calling for investment to develop tourism, typically is upgrading seaside resort, entertainment parks on seashore, in sea, on mountain, shopping centers; has been building the telpher system of Big Mountain – Small Mountain . In industry, small scale industry, we are calling for investment of factories into Dong Xuyen Industrial Park and technical infrastructure in Phuoc Thang Industrial Park …
